Test The Performance Of The Wireless Distribution

When will build wireless point to multipoint access for distribution in an area with multiple devices AP, there are several options that can be applied to the network model. Can use the method of Distribution System (DS) which each AP is working independently or can also use wireless technology WDS where AP connected with each other through wireless. The ultimate goal is of course to let Clients still get the same service even though Client moved or relocated (roaming).

On the method of DS, each AP is configured independently, with mode = ap-bridge and the same SSID setting but with different frequencies to avoid interference. To get the roaming effects all AP connected to one Main Router of the same, i.e. router that provides services like DHCP or hotspots. The DS difference and WDS is already discussed in our article the Wireless Routing with MME Protocol

In the article this time we will do a simple experiment for measuring the network quality method of DS and WDS. An experiment done with access video call from the Client and perform the movement from one location to another. At the moment the Client switch location, Client connection will be dihandle by the AP. The parameters will be seen is the quality of the video call and PING results towards the Client.

AP DS Schema Independent

The first test was done on the DS network scheme. Each AP to use mode = ap-bridge with the same SSID on each point. So that's not the case at each frequency interference AP using the frequency band that is not tangent. More details of the election is defined and the Band see article election of Band Frequency On Wireless Implementation &.

To get the roaming effect each AP is connected to the Router via a Main switch. Clients get IP 192.168.30.251 from a DHCP Server (Main Router). With a Client doing video streaming and mobile site then obtained the following results
There are times when the timeout connection 5-6 client moved from AP to AP 1 2. Any video call connection had jamming lag a few seconds of reconnecting with the status and then back to normal.

WDS Scheme

The second test used a scheme where one WDS AP with AP to another connected via wireless. WDS configuration examples can be seen in the previous article

At this time the trial will use WDS mode static, dynamic and WDS Mesh. With the same experiment is obtained the following results:

In the experiment with using four Modes WDS does not affect streaming video call Client. Video Call remains in full swing when the Client switches site even if seen from a do ping results occur when client connection timeout 1-3 move AP.

Conclusion

From the results of a simple experiment on top of WDS Mode, faster process of switching costs on appeal with the independent bridge AP mode. However, in another article, i.e. Test the Throughput of the Wireless Mode test results mentioned that throughput can be missed by WDS mode down very significant because 1 Wlan working twice that is receiving the signal and then radiate it back.

If the wireless distribution goals you wake up is to get maximal throughput it is better to use a method of DS in order for AP performance more light but with a displacement of AP (roaming) under the WDS.

Each scheme has its advantages and drawbacks of each, as the network admin must be good at choosing according to needs and targets to be achieved.
